A classic comfort food dish that combines layers of rich beef, creamy cheese, and tender pasta, topped with a bubbling golden crust.
Ingredients
Scale:
1 pound ground beef (80% lean)
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
Salt and pepper to taste
15 ounces ricotta cheese
1 large egg
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
9 to 12 lasagna noodles
1 cup additional shredded mozzarella cheese for topping
Instructions
Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Sauté until browned, about 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon for even cooking. Drain excess fat.
Add the onion and garlic to the skillet, cooking until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.
Make the Cheese Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, Italian seasoning, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well until smooth and creamy.
Cook the Noodles: Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and lay flat on a clean kitchen towel.
Assemble the Lasagna: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a 9x13-inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Layer 3 noodles, half of the cheese mixture, and a third of the meat sauce. Repeat layers, finishing with noodles and remaining meat sauce.
Add Cheese Topping: Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese evenly over the top of the lasagna.
Bake: Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
Rest and Serve: Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm.
